The daily reality for most people in Brazil — and certainly for the animals living on the streets — is far from easy. In many regions of this vast South American country, poverty is widespread.
For the Dutch couple Roel and Janneke Wetters, this was more of a challenge than a problem. As devoted animal lovers, they wanted to help as many stray animals as possible when they emigrated to Fortaleza, on the northern coast of Brazil, about twenty years ago.
Since then, they have built a beautiful premium elegant hotel, where — besides their guests — veterinarians and final‑year veterinary students are also welcome. Through their Fenix Foundation, and in cooperation with a local veterinarian in a private clinic, they ensure that large numbers of stray animals, as well as pets belonging to very poor families, can be sterilised.

Stray Assist in Goa - India.

We have been in close contact for almost 10 years with the Dutch Fionna, who runs a small business in Goa, India together with her husband. Besides their daily work, she is very active in helping injured stray animals and, above all, in ensuring that many animals can be sterilised.
For this purpose, they created the project Stray Assist, which they manage and finance themselves (with the income from their small business) as a response to the lack of solutions for stray animals. They have even set up a small private clinic inside their own home, where they invite local veterinarians to come and help. They also support a larger local animal clinic.

His roles within the organisation include responding to emergency calls and providing treatment and care for injured, sick, or neglected animals. Pankaj is also responsible for carrying out rescue plans, helping coordinate adoptions, and managing the sterilisation programme. His dedication has a significant impact on the success of GOAV.
People For Animals - India
Faridabad - India

PEOPLE FOR ANIMALS FARIDABAD was founded in 2007 to help the enormous number of stray animals in the large city of Faridabad and the surrounding region. PFA Faridabad is a registered charity and meets all required standards. In addition to a clinic, they also operate a large shelter.
They not only rescue stray animals such as dogs and cats, but they also take in other injured and/or sick animals, including monkeys, large birds, and even regularly go out to help an injured “holy” cow on the streets. They also place large tubs of water throughout the streets every day so that stray animals can drink during the extreme heat.
They are also very active in performing as many sterilisations as possible. Our chairman, Hanno Berger, is closely involved in arranging veterinarians and final‑year veterinary students who wish to travel to this location to assist with the programme.
Asociata Pro Animals - Roemenië

In Romania, not only the animals living on the streets or in public shelters are insufficiently — or not at all — sterilised, but the same is true for many animals that actually have an owner.
In rural areas, it is almost impossible to find a veterinarian — they are rarely available — and as a result, pets are seldom or never sterilised.
Dr. Patricia Paraschiv, veterinarian and vice‑president of the education and sterilisation team of Asociatia Pro Animals in Romania, believed this had to change and founded a mobile clinic.

Paws Care Vet - Roemenië

Dierenkliniek Paws Care Vet is a small‑scale veterinary clinic specialising in the sterilisation of the extremely large numbers of stray animals in Romania.
Located in the town of Racari, the clinic can be reached 24/7, and as a foundation we greatly admire how, with such a small team, they still manage to sterilise large numbers of stray animals every year.
Animal Rescue - Suriname

Stichting Animal Rescue Suriname (STARS) is a small non‑profit organisation that provides help to street animals, especially dogs and cats in need.
Their focus is on older animals and animals with permanent injuries, who are often considered “difficult to adopt” in Suriname. Previously, there was no dedicated shelter for these animals, as adopters generally preferred healthy, young pets.
Saved Souls Foundation - Thailand

Saved Souls Animal Sanctuary was founded in 2010 by Gabriela Leonhard. The shelter is located in Ban Kok Gnam in the province of Khon Kaen, in northeastern Thailand. 430 dogs and 91 cats have found a new home with us.
Our on-site veterinarian provides day-to-day care including sterilisation, amputation, medication for blood parasites, liver diseases, and other illnesses rescued animals suffer. Animals are taken to Khon Kaen University Animal Hospital or other professional hospitals for more serious operations.
